Burngate Stone Carving Centre : Courses

We offer a variety of short courses for all levels of experience, from complete beginners to more experienced carvers. We teach children, families and adults at the Centre and from 6 years+ you can try your hand at this traditional craft and create your own unique masterpiece.

We have a full teaching schedule and offer courses all year, whatever the weather. The courses are all flexible and you can learn relief carving, sculpture and lettering with experienced local stone carvers and masons.

If you are unable to attend a scheduled course date but would still like to try some stone carving, please contact the Centre to arrange some one to one carving tuition (prices start from £25 per hour).

Courses at the Burngate Stone Carving Centre

Timing:

Our two hour have-a-go carving courses typically start at 10.00am or 2.00pm. They last for approx 2 hours and we do not stop for a break during this session.

One day (and multiple day) courses run from 10.00am to 4.00pm, with an approx 30 minute lunch break. Other course times vary, please see each course page for details.

Lunch:

Please bring your own packed lunch if you are joing us for the day (we are about one mile from a village shop and pub if you forget your lunch). We provide refreshments and biscuits, which you can help yourself to throughout the session.

Clothing:

The workshops are dusty environments so old or work clothes are recommended. We'll supply safety goggles which must be worn at all times in and around the workshop areas. We also highly recommend that you wear steel toe-capped boots, but at the very least you should wear very stout footwear. Sandals or flip-flops are NOT suitable.

Age limits:

Children's stone carving courses - 6-13 years only

Family stone carving courses - 6-80 years+ (please note that we charge adult rates from the age of 14 years)

Adult cstone carving courses - 14 years+

Most of our day courses are for 14 years+ (but please contact us if you have a younger child, 11 - 13 years who would like to join a day course to discuss options)

You can email us at info@burngatestonecentre.co.uk or phone us on 01929 439405 to make a booking. We can take payment by cash, cheques or card. Please note that cheques must be made payable to Purbeck Stone Centre Trust Ltd.

Please note that under normal circumstances we require payment in advance to enable us to confirm course attendance. Once your form or details have been recorded and payment received, we'll send you confirmation of your booking and any further information you might need, such as directions or a list of places to stay if you require accommodation.
