A banker = a work bench or work surface suitable for working stone on i.e. stable and solid!
Here at the Centre we have two covered spaces that masons or carvers are welcome to hire out to undertake their own work in a splendid purpose made environment, and with access to help and advice from the Centre Manager if you feel you need it. The workspace is enclosed on three sides (and roofed) but open at the front to allow plenty of fresh air and views of the coast. You really get the whole inspirational experience standing at your banker looking out at the fields and sea; it really is a great place to work. Bankers will be available but you are expected to use your own tools and supply your own stone. If you require assistance with purchasing stone from a local quarry then the Centre Manager will be happy to help you on that front.
The space will be hired out on a first come first served basis and can be rented out by the half day, day, week or month. One of the spaces is slightly smaller than the other and that one can be rented out as a single unit if you need all the space to yourself. The other space can only be rented out as banker space i.e. you hire a single banker, and if more than one banker has been booked then you'll be sharing the space with one or more other masons or carvers (which should make for a nice sociable experience!). All this workspace will be available all year round, and has lighting and electrical points (230v and 110v). We will, however, discourage the use of power tools if we have any courses running or if there are other masons or carvers working in proximity i.e. you could only use a grinder or similar if you are the only one using the workspace at that time.
You're renting the banker space for a set duration, so when you've finished with the banker for the day/week/month etc, you will need to remove your stone from it. We will try to provide some storage space if you'd prefer to leave your work on site (see disclaimer at bottom of page). If this will not be convenient you'll need to discuss your requirements with the Centre Manager, and I'm sure we'll be able to come to some sort of arrangement!
What else do you get? Well you get use of the toilet and tea and coffee making facilities, but you might have to bring your own biscuits!
The working day for the workshop workspace currently runs from 8.30am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday. We might be able to negotiate working hours outside this but if the Manager is not at the Centre then the toilet and kitchen facilities will be locked up and therefore not available. If you're happy to work without these facilties then weekend working may be allowed by arrangement.

Disclaimer: If you wish to keep your stone at the Centre on an ongoing basis then you do so at your own risk; the Centre or Centre Manager cannot be held responsible for damage to individuals work by other masons, students, or members of the public. We will be looking into the possibility of carvers being able to take out insurance for their own work and if we have any success finding info on this then we'll pass it on to anyone who's interested.
